Beware of fake VIN, concealed number plates, Lagos govt warns motorists

Lagos motorists using fake Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) and concealing their number plates have been issued a stern warning by the Lagos State Government.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, made this known in a statement on Thursday, emphasizing the security risks and legal consequences of such infractions.

According to Giwa, the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, mandates the proper display of VINs and number plates on all vehicles operating within the state.

He stressed that the government has zero tolerance for the use of fraudulent identification numbers and obscured plates, warning that offenders will face legal action.

He further highlighted the importance of the Lagos State Vehicle Identification Database in tracking registered vehicles, identifying owners, and recovering stolen automobiles. The concealment of number plates, he noted, hampers the efforts of security agencies in tackling crimes such as “One-Chance” robberies and other traffic-related offenses.

Giwa urged all motorists involved in these unlawful acts to remove any coverings from their number plates and cease the use of fake VINs immediately. He warned that those who fail to comply will be swiftly arrested and prosecuted.

“The Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, unequivocally mandates the proper display of Vehicle Identification Numbers on all automobiles traversing the state’s road network,” he stated.

“Just as every individual bears a name beyond their choice, so too does every vehicle possess an assigned number plate, which must be displayed without obstruction.”

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing traffic laws, ensuring public safety, and maintaining order on the roads.
