Biden formally joins 2024 US presidential race
The US President, Joe Biden, on Tuesday said he would seek a second term, setting the stage for a potential rematch with his predecessor, Donald Trump.
In a video released on Tuesday, 80-year-old Biden described next year’s contest as a fight against the Republican extremism and indicated that he needed more time to fully realise his vow to restore the nation’s character.
“This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for reelection,” he said.
Biden enters the 2024 race with a significant legislative record but low approval ratings.
No major Democratic challengers are expected to emerge. Only two candidates are currently in the race: self-help guru Marianne Williamson and anti-vaccine and environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
On the Republican side, the race has so far been dominated by Trump, who has launched his third bid for the White House.
In January, Trump publicly declared his presidential bid for 2024 in New Hampshire and South Carolina.
“Together we will complete the unfinished business of making America great again,” he said.
