BREAKING: Bonus Dispute Rocks Super Eagles Ahead of Algeria AFCON Clash

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have threatened to boycott their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match against Algeria in Marrakech unless the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) clears all outstanding winning bonuses owed to players and officials.

A highly placed source within the team disclosed that members of the squad are still awaiting payment of win bonuses from four AFCON matches against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Mozambique. The unresolved payments, the source said, have created growing tension in the camp despite the team’s strong performance in the tournament.

According to the source, the players remain committed to Nigeria’s AFCON campaign but have unanimously resolved not to train or travel to Marrakech for the next fixture until the financial issues are addressed.

This development mirrors a similar standoff in November, when the Super Eagles threatened to boycott their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Gabon over unpaid entitlements. At the time, players and officials withheld participation in training sessions until assurances were given by football authorities.

In a joint statement issued during that earlier dispute, the squad said they had suspended training due to unresolved payment issues, stressing that the situation affected both players and officials.

The latest bonus controversy has once again put the NFF under pressure, raising concerns that administrative issues could disrupt Nigeria’s quest for continental success at AFCON. As of the time of filing this report, the federation had yet to issue an official response to the players’ latest demands.
