BREAKING: Fubara Dumps PDP for APC Amid Power Shift in Rivers Politics

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major shift in the state’s political landscape and deepening nationwide realignments ahead of the 2027 elections. The governor, previously elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), announced his defection during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House, Port Harcourt, on Tuesday.

Governor Fubara described the move as a strategic step to align fully with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which he said had supported Rivers State during its recent political crisis. He noted that effective collaboration with the presidency required open affiliation rather than what he called “backdoor support.”

Fubara’s switch to the APC comes amid a broader wave of defections in the state. In recent days, 16 Rivers State House of Assembly members— including the Speaker — abandoned the PDP for the ruling party, citing deepening internal rifts within the opposition. Political observers say these shifts reinforce APC’s growing influence in the South-South and could significantly weaken PDP’s national structure.

The governor’s departure adds to the mounting challenges facing the PDP, which has been grappling with internal divisions and losing key political figures across the country. Analysts believe that Fubara’s defection may trigger further realignments as politicians positioning for 2027 reassess their loyalties.

With Rivers State being one of Nigeria’s most politically strategic and economically vital regions, Fubara’s move is expected to reshape alliances both within the state and at the national level.
