Breaking: Labour suspends nationwide strike

Labour on Tuesday suspended its nationwide strike to allow for uninterrupted meetings with the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage.

Some sources said the suspension of the strike was for one week, a report by Vanguard however indicated it would last for just five days.

Labour leaders at an emergency meeting with the Federal Government team on Monday night in Abuja agreed that the minimum wage negotiation parties would meet every day for one week to perfect acceptable new salary package for workers.

“A joint NEC meeting of TUC/NLC has approved to relax the industrial action for one week with immediate effect,” The Nation quoted a source as saying.

When labour leaders met with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, and other government officials on Monday night, Akume confirmed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to paying more than N60,000 as the minimum wage.

He also assured that no worker would face persecution for participating in the strike.

It was learn that following the scheduled 10am meeting with the FG Tripartite Committee today (Tuesday), labour decided to suspend the strike.

All government and private offices are expected to reopen and operate as usual.
