BREAKING: Military Names Officers in Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu Government
The Nigerian Military has officially confirmed the involvement of several serving officers in an alleged coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, marking a major shift from earlier denials and ending months of public speculation.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced that a military investigation panel set up in October 2025 has concluded its probe into the arrest of 16 military officers, initially detained for what was described as “acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.”
Following the completion of the investigation, the Armed Forces disclosed that the officers were linked to activities deemed inconsistent with constitutional order and military professionalism, and are now to face court-martial and other disciplinary നടപടments in line with military law.

According to military sources, the officers were found to have engaged in actions that undermined military discipline and posed a threat to national stability, though full details of the alleged plot remain within the scope of ongoing judicial military proceedings.
The arrests, carried out in early October 2025, initially sparked controversy after reports emerged suggesting a planned coup attempt against the Tinubu government. At the time, the military strongly denied the claims, insisting the detentions were purely internal disciplinary matters.
However, as public pressure mounted and calls intensified for transparency, the Armed Forces constituted an investigative panel to examine the allegations. Civil society groups and legal experts later demanded either the arraignment or release of the detained officers.
The January 2026 disclosure by the DHQ now represents the first official acknowledgment that the investigation uncovered evidence pointing to an attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democratic order.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that the officers will be subjected to court-martial proceedings, stressing that the Armed Forces remain loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and committed to safeguarding democracy, national security, and civilian rule.
