AFCON: Nigeria beat Egypt 1-0 in Group D opener

Nigeria’s Super Eagles started the 33rd African Nations Cup on a winning note, beating Egypt 1-0 in the Group D opening match in Cameroon.

Kelechi Iheanacho scored the only goal of the match in the 30th minute.

Super Eagles, who now top Group D with the today’s victory, were impressive throughout the game.

With the victory, Nigeria broke Egypt’s unbeaten record. Pharaohs were unbeaten in their last 16 group matches at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Before now, Egypt’s last defeat in the group stage was at the 2004 tournament when they lost 2-1 to Algeria.

This is the ninth encounter between Nigeria and Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria hold the upper hand with four wins against Egypt’s two.

Nigeria is making its 19th appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations. They have reached the semi-finals in 14 of their last 16 AFCON  participations, winning the tournament on three occasions.
