Breaking: Oyetola wins Osun APC gov primary, defeats Aregbesola’s candidate, Adeoti

Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, has emerged winner of the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) conducted on Saturday.

He will fly the flag of the party in the July 16 governorship election, having defeated two other candidates in the primary, Moshood Adeoti and Yusuf Lasun to win the governorship primary on Saturday. Adeoti is a favoured candidate of Rauf Aregbesola, Minister of Interior and former governor of the state.

The results were announced around 3am on Sunday by AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Kwara State governor and chairman of the Osun APC primary election committee.

He said, “I hereby certified that Gboyega Oyetola, having secured the number of highest votes cast at the primary election and having secured all guidelines contained, is hereby declared winner.”

Oyetola was announced winner having polled 222,169 votes while his closest challenger, Moshood Adeoti, got 12,921 votes and Yusuf Lasun garnered 460.

According to the primary election committee, the total number of accredited voters stood at 247,207 while 235,550 votes were cast.

But the Rasaq Salinsile-led faction of the party to which the minister belongs, rejected the result, saying that the exercise was fraught with irregularities.

Some party members also claimed that their names were expunged from the voters’ register.

Aregbesola had described the exercise as a “sham of an election”.

The minister had asked his supporters not to take laws into their hands, saying his camp would “explore all peaceful and legal means for addressing the matter in order to obtain justice”.

The APC in Osun has two factions: one is loyal to Aregbesola while the supports Oyetola, the incumbent governor of the state.
