BREAKING: UK Court rules against deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda
The UK Supreme Court has ruled that the British government’s contentious proposal to transfer asylum seekers to Rwanda is unlawful.
This idea was meant to discourage people from making risky crossings across the Channel in small boats.
Individuals in Rwanda will be given the option of seeking refuge within the country, returning to their home country, or seeking asylum in another country, with the exception of the United Kingdom.

But Lord Reed, President of the court, says there is a “real risk” asylum seekers may be sent from Rwanda to the places they fled from.
Since being announced in 2022, the plan has been thwarted by legal challenges – the High Court ruled it lawful before the Court of Appeal overturned the decision.
The Supreme Court has now confirmed the Court of Appeal’s decision.
