“With his clear strategic direction and consistent support, I was able to lead the Nigerian Army through a historic transformation.

“The military became more professional, better trained, and better equipped.

“Under his leadership and with his belief in our mission, we successfully reclaimed all territories previously held by Boko Haram and made significant strides in the broader counterterrorism, anti-banditry and anti-kidnapping efforts across the country.

Bututai said Buhari’s legacy of integrity, impeccable character, simplicity, discipline, and patriotism will continue to inspire generations of leaders and citizens alike.

According to him, “The nation he loved and served so selflessly will never forget him”.

Buhari passed away in London around 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness, according to a statement from the Presidency.

Following the announcement, President Bola Tinubu ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of the deceased, who had served Nigeria first as military head of state from 1984 to 1985, and later as a two-term civilian president from 2015 to 2023.

During his 2015 swearing-in ceremony, he pledged to avoid political vendettas, declaring that “there would be no paying off old scores” and famously stated, “I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody.”

By 2023, after completing his eight-year tenure, the late president acknowledged his shortcomings and appealed for forgiveness.

“Whoever thought that there has been some form of injustice on him—we are all humans—there is no doubt I hurt some people, and I wish they would pardon me. And those who think that I have hurt them, please pardon me,” the late president had said.
