Buratai Defends Nigeria’s Resilience, Says Nation Is “Rising, Not Failing” Despite Insecurity
Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has dismissed growing claims that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse, insisting the country remains resilient despite its current security and economic challenges.
Buratai’s position comes amid heightened criticism of the Federal Government following rising insecurity, killings, and international comments portraying Nigeria in a negative light — including recent remarks by former US President Donald Trump, who reportedly described Nigeria as a “disgraced nation” while threatening possible military action.
In a personally signed statement, Buratai said such narratives misinterpret Nigeria’s history and underestimate the strength and character of its people.
He argued that describing Nigeria as a “potential failed state” ignores decades of national resilience, adding that the country has consistently weathered storms and emerged stronger.
According to him, Nigeria’s foundation was laid by visionary independence-era leaders such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose legacies continue to shape national development. He noted that subsequent leaders — including military heads and democratic presidents — also played key roles in keeping the nation united.
Buratai stressed that despite economic difficulties, Nigeria remains Africa’s largest economy, powered by thriving sectors such as telecommunications, fintech, and Nollywood, which have grown without depending solely on oil.
He cautioned Western nations and global partners against viewing Nigeria through the lens of instability, urging them instead to explore beneficial partnerships that support the country’s projected rise.
“In the final analysis, Nigeria’s destiny is in the hands of Nigerians — a people blessed with abundant resources and an indomitable spirit. The world should see Nigeria not as a problem but as a rising global power. We will not fail. We are rising,” he wrote.
Buratai maintained that Nigeria remains a great country, one whose future cannot be defined by present challenges.
