CAF Bans Egypt’s Attia, Mohsen Ahead of Super Eagles Bronze Medal Clash

CAF Bans Egypt’s Attia, Mohsen Ahead of Super Eagles Bronze Medal Clash

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended Egypt’s midfield star Marwan Attia and forward Salah Mohsen ahead of their AFCON 2025 third-place playoff against Nigeria’s Super Eagles, dealing a major blow to the Pharaohs’ squad.

The disciplinary action comes after both players were involved in unsporting conduct during Egypt’s 1‑0 semifinal defeat to Senegal. Attia was penalised for gestures suggesting referee bias, while Mohsen faced sanctions for mocking media personnel. Both players are banned for two matches, ruling them out of the bronze medal showdown.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan now faces the challenge of restructuring the team, particularly in midfield and attack, as the Pharaohs aim to salvage pride in the tournament. For Nigeria, the clash offers a chance to claim a record-extending ninth AFCON bronze medal, though the Super Eagles are also managing fitness concerns, with defender Calvin Bassey suspended and striker Victor Osimhen recovering from injury.

The suspensions underscore CAF’s commitment to enforcing discipline during the tournament, ensuring fair play and professionalism. As both sides prepare for Saturday’s match at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, fans can expect a high-stakes, tactical encounter despite the absent Egyptian stars.
