CAF Investigates Post-Match Violence After Nigeria’s 2-0 AFCON Win Over Algeria
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened a full-scale investigation into the violent scenes that erupted after Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal played in Marrakech, Morocco.
According to a report by Africa Soccer, CAF is carefully reviewing detailed submissions from match officials, stadium security operatives, and accredited media representatives as part of its disciplinary process.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria sealed qualification for the AFCON 2025 semi-finals through second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, extending their strong run in the tournament and knocking Algeria out of contention.
However, celebrations were quickly overshadowed by chaos at the final whistle. Algerian players and officials reportedly reacted angrily to several refereeing decisions, which they considered unfavourable. In the aftermath, some players allegedly attempted to physically confront match referee Issa Sy and his assistants.

Security personnel were forced to intervene to prevent the situation from escalating further on the pitch.
Disorder was also reported in the stands, where Algerian supporters allegedly attempted to breach security barriers and vandalised parts of the stadium infrastructure, prompting additional security deployment.
CAF is expected to determine whether the incidents constitute violations of its disciplinary code, with potential sanctions ranging from fines and suspensions to further punitive measures against the Algerian Football Federation.
The continental football body reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on violence, intimidation of match officials, and crowd disturbances, stressing its commitment to fair play, player safety, and orderly conduct throughout all CAF-sanctioned competitions.
Nigeria will now await their semi-final opponents as CAF concludes its assessment of the incidents.
