Candidate for legislative election dies of heart attack during live debate

Hernán Damiani, a 66-year-old candidate for Argentina’s upcoming October 26 legislative elections, died after suffering a heart attack while taking part in a live-streamed political debate.

Damiani, representing the center-right Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) in the province of Misiones, collapsed just minutes after the start of the program La Casa, where he was appearing alongside other candidates. He was rushed to Madariaga Hospital in Posadas, but doctors later confirmed his death.

A veteran figure in Misiones politics, Damiani served two terms as a provincial deputy during the 1990s and later held a seat in the National Congress. He was currently running on the UCR ticket for the October legislative elections. Misiones, located in northern Argentina, is internationally known for the Iguazu Falls.

Following the on-air incident, the show’s hosts requested that footage of the moment not be released out of respect for Damiani’s family. YouTube subsequently removed the original recording to prevent its circulation. News of his sudden passing sent shockwaves through the province’s political community.

“With great stupor and deep sadness I receive the unexpected news of the death of Hernán Damiani. My recognition of his career, militancy and strong convictions,” expressed Misiones Governor Hugo Passalacqua on social media.
