Chevron set to produce 17,000 bpd oil from new field in N/Delta

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has announced the discovery of a substantial new oil field located in the shallow offshore sector of Nigeria’s South South region.

The newly found field is projected to yield an impressive 17,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd), which is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s struggling oil production levels.

In a statement released on Friday by Olusoga Oduselu, the General Manager of Policy Government and Public Affairs, Jim Swartz, Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron, provided details about the discovery.

He noted that the “near-field discovery” was made through the Meji NW-1 spud in Petroleum Mining Lease 49.

Swartz elaborated that drilling for the well commenced on September 2 and reached a total depth of 8,983 feet on September 13, 2024. He confirmed that the well operations were finalized, with the rig departing the site on October 2.

He reported that the well encountered approximately 690 feet of hydrocarbons within Miocene sands, confirming the extension of the Meji field.

According to the Chevron spokesperson, this achievement aligns with CNL’s commitment to further develop and expand its Nigerian resources, particularly in onshore and shallow water locations.

“This (also) supports Chevron’s broader global exploration strategy to find new resources that extend the life of producing assets in existing operating areas and deliver production with shorter development cycle times,” he stated.

He concluded by emphasizing that the NNPC-CNL joint venture will persist in working closely with the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to bolster the advancement of the Nigerian oil and gas sector and the overall economy.
