Senator Adams Oshiomhole and Edo State First Lady Betsy Obaseki
Childlessness: I had painful miscarriages, says Obaseki’s wife
Edo State First Lady, Betsy Obaseki, has reacted to recent comments by Senator Adams Oshiomhole regarding her childlessness, affirming that she is “fruitful” and fulfilling God’s purpose for her life.
She said this during a town hall meeting organised by Edo women in diaspora for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, where she shared her journey and encouraged other women to find fulfillment beyond motherhood.
Recall that the former Edo State governor had mocked the first lady after a rally in Igueben where she stated that among the Edo gubernatorial candidates, only Ighodalo has a wife.

While reflecting on her own painful experiences with miscarriages, Obaseki said, “I had conceived and had miscarriages and painful evacuations, resulting in babies dying in our wombs. But for women like me, I want to say: you are not barren and don’t be discouraged. I call you fruitful. You and I are potential and proud mothers of children.”
She further explained that fruitfulness extends beyond childbearing and encompasses impacting lives and creating positive societal change.
“As a human being, everyone is structured to have a purpose in life. It wouldn’t matter if jabs are thrown at you,” she added.
The meeting, held in support of Ighodalo’s candidacy, also saw his wife, Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, express her commitment to continue social intervention programmes for women if her husband is elected.
She praised the Edo women in diaspora for their support, and pledged to further the legacy of the first lady.
