Confusion in Anambra community as Archbishop, driver declared missing
The Anglican community in Nnewi, Anambra State, and beyond is gripped with anxiety following the unexplained disappearance of the retired Archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi, Most Rev. Godwin Okpala, along with his driver.
The duo reportedly went missing on Friday morning during a trip to the Umuchu community in Aguata Local Government Area. They never arrived at their destination, and their current whereabouts remain unknown.
Efforts to contact them have yielded no results, leaving the church and the local community in a state of apprehension.

In response to the troubling situation, the Bishop of the Nnewi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi, issued a prayer request urging members of the church to intercede for the safe return of the former archbishop and his driver. Confirming the incident to Sunday PUNCH via phone, Obi stated, “Yes, the report is true. However, you will have to contact our information board for further details.”
A member of the church’s communication board, who asked not to be named, added, “Yes, it is true, the bishop and his driver went on a trip to somewhere in Umuchu community on Friday morning, and till now, their whereabouts have remained unknown. We have contacted the relevant authorities, and the police are aware of the development. We hope for the safe return of the bishop and his driver.”
However, when reached for comment, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated, “There is no such report before me.”
The church continues to appeal for prayers and remains hopeful for a positive outcome.
