Correctional officer attempts suicide in Zamfara

A staff member of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abdullahi Nura, a Chief Correctional Assistant (CCA) serving at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Gusau, Zamfara State, attempted to take his own life early Thursday morning at the Gusau Dam, the largest and deepest dam in the state capital.

According to a statement issued by the State Correctional Public Relations Officer, Mustapha Abubakar (ASC I), Nura had reported to duty before hiring a motorcycle rider, popularly known as an Okada, to transport him to the dam.

 He said upon arrival, Nura abruptly jumped into the water in an apparent suicide attempt, for reasons yet to be disclosed.

The motorcyclist, who witnessed the act, quickly raised an alarm and alerted security personnel at the dam site as he was rescued from the water.

“He was pulled out still in his service uniform, with his official ID card folded on his chest,” the statement revealed. The Nigerian Correctional Service State Headquarters was immediately notified and responded promptly.

The Controller of Corrections in the state, CCS Musa Tanko, dispatched a team to the scene.

Nura was taken to the Medical Clinic at the MSCC in Gusau, where he is currently receiving treatment.

The statement confirmed that Nura has since regained consciousness and is recovering steadily under medical supervision.
