Court Orders Facebook to Delete Alleged Defamatory Posts Against Senator Natasha
A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted an interim injunction restraining a UK-based activist and Meta Platforms Inc. (Facebook) from publishing or circulating alleged defamatory content against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District.
In the ruling delivered by Justice I. Mohammed, the court ordered Facebook to immediately take down all posts adjudged to be defamatory and to prevent further publication of similar content pending the determination of the substantive suit. The judge held that the senator had established a prima facie case and that allowing the posts to remain online could cause irreparable damage to her reputation.
The suit was instituted following a series of viral social media posts allegedly made by the activist, which Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed contained false, malicious and damaging allegations against her. According to court documents, the posts were widely shared on Facebook, attracting public backlash, security concerns and reputational harm.

Beyond the takedown order, the court also directed Meta Platforms to preserve all electronic records, including metadata, logs and related digital footprints linked to the disputed posts, to aid proper adjudication of the case.
The ruling adds to a growing list of high-profile defamation suits in Nigeria, particularly those involving social media platforms and public figures. Legal analysts say the decision reinforces the judiciary’s increasing willingness to hold digital platforms accountable while balancing freedom of expression with the right to reputation.
This case also comes amid other legal actions involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, including previous defamation suits against political figures over statements made online and offline, highlighting the expanding role of the courts in regulating online political discourse.
The substantive matter has been adjourned to a later date for hearing.
