Federal High Court in Abuja
A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of nine terror suspects linked to the deadly Yelwata killings in Benue State at the Kuje Correctional Centre, pending the commencement of their trial.
The suspects were arraigned on an amended 57-count charge bordering on terrorism, mass murder, conspiracy and destruction of property, arising from the violent attack on Yelwata community that reportedly left scores of residents dead and several homes razed.
At the court session, the prosecution informed the court that the charges were amended, leading to the removal of one defendant’s name, leaving nine accused persons to face trial. When the charges were read, all the defendants pleaded not guilty.

Counsel to the suspects made an oral application for bail, but the court declined the request, directing the defence to file a formal bail application in line with due process. The judge subsequently ordered that the suspects be remanded at the Kuje prison facility until further proceedings.
The court adjourned the case to February 26 and 27, 2026, for the commencement of full trial, stressing the need for an expedited hearing given the gravity of the alleged offences.
The Yelwata killings had sparked widespread outrage across Benue State and Nigeria, with renewed calls for justice, accountability, and stronger security measures to curb violent attacks on rural communities.
