Court Remands Three Kano Electoral Officials Over Alleged N1.02bn Fraud

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of three top officials of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) over their alleged involvement in a N1.02 billion fraud scheme, highlighting ongoing concerns about financial misconduct in public office.

The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, remanded the KANSIEC Chairman, Professor Sani Malumfashi, the Secretary, Anas Muhammed Mustapha, and the Deputy Director of Accounts, Ado Garba, in Kuje Correctional Centre after their arraignment on six counts of fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

According to the ICPC, the officials allegedly conspired to siphon N450 million through accounts linked to SLM Agro Global Farm at Jaiz Bank and diverted additional funds into other accounts between November and December 2024, in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Despite pleading not guilty and requesting bail, the defendants were told to formalise their bail applications in writing, after which the court will consider the submissions. The matter was adjourned for further hearing.

The remand comes amid broader efforts by anti‑graft agencies to prosecute public officials accused of corruption, with similar cases reported in other states, including Katsina and Edo, where officials faced allegations of fraud running into billions of naira. Analysts say such prosecutions are key to strengthening public confidence in governance and electoral institutions.

This case also draws attention to past electoral disputes and fraud allegations in Kano State, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in the management of public funds by election bodies.
