Offa bank robbery
A Nigerian court has upheld the death sentence handed down to five convicts found guilty of the notorious Offa bank robbery, reaffirming the earlier judgment that sentenced them to death for their roles in the deadly attack.
In its ruling, the court dismissed the appeals filed by the convicts, holding that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The judges ruled that the evidence presented during trial clearly linked the defendants to the coordinated robbery attacks on several banks in Offa, Kwara State, which claimed multiple lives and left many others injured.

The court noted that eyewitness testimonies, confessional statements, and other exhibits tendered by the prosecution were properly admitted and credible. It ruled that the trial court acted within the law when it convicted and sentenced the defendants to death.
The Offa bank robbery, which shocked the nation, involved simultaneous attacks on commercial banks, leading to the deaths of security personnel and civilians. The incident sparked widespread outrage and prompted a major crackdown on violent crimes across the state and neighbouring regions.
By upholding the sentence, the court stressed the need to deter armed robbery and violent crimes, describing the offence as a grave threat to public safety and national security. The ruling effectively brings the long-running legal battle closer to an end, unless further appeals are pursued.
