Cultists arrest men stealing from accident victim in Lagos

Cultists arrest men stealing from accident victim in Lagos

A driver lost his life in an accident on the Iya Alaro bridge, close to Maryland, Lagos State, in the wee hours of Saturday.

Social media users who commented under a post by @Gcfrnaija1 on Twitter alleged that the victim’s car was looted immediately the crash happened.

FIJ found that some young men truly chose to loot the car rather than make a genuine effort towards assisting the helpless driver.

HOW THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED

A waste collector under the bridge, who chose not to mention his name, explained to FIJ that the driver was the only person in the vehicle and was driving towards Ojota very early in the morning when the accident occurred.

According to him, the driver was driving on a high speed and suddenly hit a moving trailer on the same section of the road from the back.

“I had not come around when it happened, because it happened before dawn, but some scavengers who were here told me the driver was on a top speed and he ran into a moving trailer in front of him. He died almost instantly,” the man, who appears to be his 60s, said.

LOOTING THE DEAD

Upon sighting that an accident had occurred on the bridge, some young men showed up at the scene conducting themselves as good Samaritans.

However, their mission was to plunder the victim’s personal belongings. They stole a car battery, handsets, money and other personal effects.

Another waste collector told FIJ that “Those guys stole virtually everything on the driver”.

“That is the most heartless thing anybody can do to an accident victim,” he said. “I do not understand how humanity has eluded some people.”

Asked where the stealers were, he said, “Some Aiye guys got them and punished them. They beat them thoroughly before taking them to Ojota. I think they later took them to a police station, but I don’t know which one it was.”

The deceased drove a black Lexus GX460 with Lagos State number plate GGE-115 HX.

When contacted, CSP Oke Olufunmilayo, who was once the Divisional Police Officer heading Ketu police station, said he had been posted out of the area. He had not responded to a text message requesting for the current DPO’s contact at press time.
