Customs hand over $54,000 bribe offered by tramadol importers to EFCC

The Tincan Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has disclosed the transfer of a $54,330 bribe presented by tramadol importers to the Lagos Zonal Commander of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Michael Wekas, as per a statement released on Tuesday.

Dera Nnadi, the Customs Area Controller overseeing the command, stressed the agency’s unwavering stand against corruption, aligning with the zero-tolerance approach of the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi. Nnadi clarified that the tramadol tablets, falsely declared as electrical appliances valued at over N856 million, were connected to the attempted bribery aimed at influencing officers.

Nnadi lauded the officers for their principled stance in rejecting the bribe, emphasizing their commitment to ethical conduct and national security. He emphasized that this action flagrantly violated Section 233 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023. Urging ongoing compliance from port users, Nnadi reaffirmed the Customs Service’s collaboration with agencies like the EFCC to combat criminal activities at the port.

“Two suspects that were arrested in connection with the two containers are currently being investigated by the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control for possible prosecution,” Nnadi added.

Wekas also lauded the CGC for the letter of commendation in appreciation of the six customs officers who refused to bow to pressure and inducement from the owners of the illicit drugs.

He promised continued collaboration between the service, EFCC, and sister agencies.
