Dangote Refinery a Game Changer for Nigeria, Says NNPC Boss

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), Mr. Bayo Ojulari, has urged Nigerians to thank God for the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, describing it as a transformational asset for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Mr. Ojulari said the emergence of the Dangote Refinery has significantly boosted local refining capacity, eased Nigeria’s long-standing dependence on imported petroleum products, and strengthened the country’s energy security. He noted that for decades, Nigeria relied heavily on fuel imports despite being one of Africa’s leading crude oil producers.

According to the NNPC boss, the refinery represents a major turning point for the downstream petroleum sector, with the capacity to stabilise fuel supply, conserve foreign exchange, reduce logistics costs, and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the value chain.

He stressed that the operation of the Dangote Refinery has also introduced healthy competition into the downstream sector, helping to improve efficiency, transparency, and pricing dynamics. Mr. Ojulari added that the development aligns with the Federal Government’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products.

The NNPC chief further disclosed that NNPC Ltd. is committed to strategic collaboration with the Dangote Refinery, emphasising that cooperation between public institutions and private investors is essential for the long-term growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s energy industry.

He urged Nigerians to continue supporting policies and investments that promote local refining, saying such initiatives are critical to ending fuel scarcity, reducing exposure to global oil market shocks, and strengthening the national economy.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, located in Lagos, is Africa’s largest single-train refinery and one of the biggest in the world. Its operations are expected to reposition Nigeria as a net exporter of refined petroleum products, with far-reaching economic benefits.
