Dangote Refinery restores naira payment option for petrol
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has resumed the sale of petrol in Naira, reversing an earlier decision to transact exclusively in U.S. dollars.
The reversal was announced in a memo to marketers on Saturday, just hours after the refinery had communicated its intention to suspend Naira-based transactions for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), citing constraints tied to crude supply allocations.
According to the latest memo, the decision to reinstate Naira transactions followed the intervention of the Chairman of the Naira for Crude Technical Committee.
“Following the intervention of the Naira for Crude Technical Committee Chairman, we are pleased to inform you of the resumption of PMS sales in Naira commencing immediately,” the memo read.
“You may kindly proceed to place your orders in Naira for both self-collection and free delivery of PMS to the earlier advised locations across the country.”
The company also thanked marketers for their continued patronage.
This update comes less than 24 hours after a previous memo issued on Friday, in which Dangote Refinery had announced a halt to petrol sales in Naira, citing overextension of its Naira-crude allocations.
“We write to inform you that Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been selling petroleum products in excess of our Naira-crude allocations, and, consequently, we are unable to sustain PMS sales in Naira going forward,” the earlier memo stated.
It added that the suspension of Naira-based sales would take effect from Sunday, September 28, 2025, and offered refunds to customers who had already paid in Naira.
The swift reversal signals the influence of regulatory or policy-level interventions and underscores the sensitive balance between forex demands and domestic fuel affordability.
