Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the incumbent Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf
The leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has warned Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf to relinquish his position if he plans to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
Kwankwaso issued the warning while addressing party supporters and stakeholders in Kano, amid growing speculation that forces within the All Progressives Congress (APC) are pressuring the NNPP-led administration to realign with the ruling party.
Reacting to the reported defection moves, Kwankwaso questioned why Kano had become a focal point of political realignments, describing the situation as an attempt to strip the Kwankwasiyya movement of its only executive stronghold.
“If you have 30 governors, why must you take the Kano State governor? Is he yours? He is the only one left for us in the Government House,” Kwankwaso said.
“Those instigating him should tell him to drop the governorship for us and go, since the governorship is not meant for only one person.”
He described the unfolding political tension in Kano as a “nightmare” and urged political actors to de-escalate for the sake of the people.
“Some unfortunate things are happening in Kano that some people don’t even believe. I wish I was asleep and when I wake up, I will realise it is not true,” he said.
Kwankwaso revealed that he had been engaging key stakeholders behind the scenes to prevent what he described as a dangerous political direction that could harm the state.

“Anybody I needed to talk to, I have done that, trying to convince them that the track they are on will not benefit anybody in Kano,” he noted.
He stressed that the NNPP government in Kano still had time to deliver on its mandate, calling for unity rather than political sabotage.
“This government still has at least one year ahead. If we join heads together, people will benefit. What people are surprised about is, what is really the problem?” he asked.
Kwankwaso also criticised calls for the administration to align with what he described as “Gandujiyya”, a political structure associated with former governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
“Some people are saying we should leave this place and become members of ‘Gandujiyya’. The line has drawn itself in Kano. It is a war between light and darkness,” he declared.
Lamenting the toll of the crisis on supporters, Kwankwaso said many loyalists were emotionally and physically affected by the political uncertainty.
“Many came here crying. Some have developed high blood pressure; some are in the hospital. These are people who voted for this government,” he said.
Despite the tension, he praised supporters for their restraint, saying patience and dignity defined the Kwankwasiyya philosophy.
Kwankwaso dismissed claims that the NNPP was politically weak in Kano, insisting the party remained the dominant force in the state.
“People say our party is small. In Kano, which party is bigger than NNPP?” he asked.
While noting that the APC-led Federal Government had reached out to him and other leaders, Kwankwaso warned against underestimating Kano’s political weight.
“Almost 30 states are under APC, yet they are still pressurising Kano. Tell them they are playing with Kano and should be very careful. Kano must be treated with caution,” he warned.
