Deputy Senate President slams Trump over ‘disgraced country’ comment, threat of military action

Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has strongly condemned United States President Donald Trump for describing Nigeria as a “disgraced country” and threatening military intervention over alleged killings of Christians.

Trump, during a recent White House briefing, warned that Washington would “take decisive action” if violence against Christians in Nigeria continued. The comment has since drawn widespread criticism across Nigeria’s political spectrum.

Reacting in a viral video that circulated on Friday, Senator Jibrin described Trump’s remarks as “un-American” and “a violation of international law.”

“For the president of the United States to say, ‘You are doing this, and we are going to attack you, and Nigeria is a disgraced country,’ is quite unacceptable,” Jibrin said. “He should understand the implications of such a statement, retract it, and apologise to Nigeria.”

The Deputy Senate President argued that Trump’s threats ignored established diplomatic protocols and international legal norms.

“It’s against international law. Whatever you feel about our country, follow the legal route — go to the United Nations, seek a resolution, and proceed from there. To bypass that process is wrong and un-American,” he maintained.

Speaking to an applauding audience, Jibrin declared that Nigeria would not be intimidated by external threats, no matter their source.

“We are not afraid to speak the truth, even to the most powerful nations. If Trump were here, I would tell him directly that he has violated international law and that his approach is unacceptable,” he said.

Jibrin’s comments come amid growing diplomatic tension following Trump’s recent remarks linking Nigeria’s security challenges to alleged religious persecution. The Federal Government has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
