Former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke
Diezani Alison‑Madueke Trial: Oil Firms Allegedly Paid Salaries of Former Minister’s Staff
New revelations have emerged in the London trial of former Nigerian Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison‑Madueke, showing that energy companies holding NNPC contracts allegedly paid the salaries of her domestic staff and covered expenses tied to her UK property as part of efforts to secure business favors.
During proceedings at Southwark Crown Court, prosecutors told the court that executives and owners of companies with lucrative contracts from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) not only funded Alison‑Madueke’s UK residence but also paid wages for her housekeeper, nanny, gardener, and window cleaner. These payments, the prosecution argued, formed part of a broader corruption scheme linked to oil and gas contract awards.

Evidence presented in court suggested that these payments were consistent and ongoing, indicating a pattern of improper relationships between the former minister and energy executives. Prosecutors also highlighted luxury services such as access to a personal shopper at Harrods, financed by businessmen including Kolawole Aluko, reflecting the lavish lifestyle funded by corporate entities seeking NNPC contracts.
The case underscores the wider concerns about ethical conduct, transparency, and accountability in the Nigerian oil sector during Alison‑Madueke’s tenure. While the prosecution has not yet directly linked specific contracts to the personal benefits received, it argued that these arrangements created a conflict of interest and potential abuse of ministerial powers.
Diezani Alison‑Madueke, alongside associates including Olatimbo Ayinde and her brother Doye Agama, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial continues, with the defence challenging the claims made by prosecutors.
The revelations have drawn international attention, highlighting ongoing concerns about corruption in Nigeria’s oil industry and the accountability of public officials handling NNPC contracts.
