Dogara Finally Speaks as Pressure Mounts Over Tinubu’s 2027 Vice-Presidential Choice

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has broken his silence on growing speculation that he could replace Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 general election.

Dogara firmly dismissed the claims, urging political commentators and party stakeholders to leave his name out of vice-presidential calculations, stressing that national interest, unity, and inclusion should take precedence over personal ambition.

Speaking amid ongoing debates within the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dogara acknowledged conversations around religious and regional balance, particularly concerns over retaining a Muslim–Muslim ticket in 2027. However, he maintained that such decisions remain solely at the discretion of President Tinubu, adding that leadership choices must be guided by what best serves Nigeria’s diversity.

The former Speaker’s remarks come as internal APC discussions intensify over whether Shettima should remain on the ticket. While some party figures are advocating for a change to improve electoral balance, others have warned that dropping the current Vice President could weaken the party’s support base, especially in the North.

Meanwhile, Dogara has continued to position himself as a voice focused on governance rather than succession politics, recently criticising opposition parties for failing to offer clear policy alternatives ahead of 2027.
