The House of Representatives majority leader, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, was arrested on Tuesday by the police over his alleged role in the killing of some persons and burning of the secretariat of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) during the just concluded poll.
The police had confirmed that at least three persons were killed when the campaign secretariat of the NNPP in Tudunwada was set ablaze.
Two of the victims were reportedly burnt to death in the crisis that broke out during the collation of the results of Doguwa/Tudunwada House of Representatives election, which Doguwa was eventually declared to have won.
Doguwa was said to have been picked up at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport while about boarding a flight to Abuja.
He was reported to have personally led the thugs that set ablaze the NNPP secretariat where the two persons were burnt to death.
Doguwa, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for Doguwa/Tudun-Wada Federal Constituency, had earlier reportedly disrupted the collation of election results and forced the returning officer to declare him winner under duress.
While the office was on fire, he was said to have stood on the median of the road and allegedly used the service pistol of his orderly to kill those trying to flee from the fire.
But Doguwa at a press briefing with journalists denied any hand in the killing, adding that he only heard that the police were looking without any formal invitation.
“I never held a gun. I don’t even know how to hold a gun. I also never held any weapon throughout the election,” he said.
