DR Congo Knock Out Nigeria on Penalties to Reach 2026 World Cup Playoff
DR Congo dashed Nigeria’s World Cup hopes for the second straight cycle, winning 4–3 on penalties after a tense 1–1 draw in Rabat to book a place in March’s intercontinental playoffs.
Nigeria struck early, with Frank Onyeka finding the net inside three minutes after pouncing on a loose ball that deflected past Lionel Mpasi. But DR Congo regrouped and levelled in the 32nd minute when Elia Meschack coolly lifted the ball over Stanley Nwabali after a fortunate ricochet from Cedric Bakambu’s cross.
Both sides struggled to create clear openings after the break and through extra time, though Congo twice had goals disallowed. Nigeria, who made six substitutions—including withdrawing Victor Osimhen at half-time—failed to rediscover any attacking rhythm.

The shootout provided late drama. Nigeria missed twice through Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon, while Samuel Moutoussamy also failed for Congo. The decisive moment came when substitute goalkeeper Dimitry Fayulu saved Semi Ajayi’s effort, leaving captain Chancel Mbemba to seal the victory, which he did with authority.
The win sends DR Congo into the playoff round for a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Nigeria face another painful absence after missing out in 2022.
