Usyk Defeats Verhoeven via Controversial Stoppage to Retain Heavyweight Titles

Oleksandr Usyk retained his world heavyweight titles after a dramatic and controversial 11th-round stoppage victory over Dutch kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven in a historic showdown staged beneath the iconic Pyramids of Giza, Egypt, on Saturday night.

The highly anticipated crossover bout, billed as one of the most unusual heavyweight boxing title fights in recent history, delivered far more drama than many expected as Verhoeven pushed the unbeaten Ukrainian champion to the brink in only his second professional boxing contest.

The Dutch challenger shocked fans with his aggressive approach from the opening bell, repeatedly forcing Usyk onto the back foot with relentless pressure and sharp right-hand counters. Verhoeven’s movement and physicality troubled the usually composed champion, who appeared unusually sluggish for large parts of the contest.

Despite entering as the overwhelming favourite, Usyk struggled to impose his usual technical dominance against the former kickboxing champion, who landed several clean shots and looked increasingly confident as the fight progressed.

By the end of the 10th round, the official scorecards reflected just how competitive the contest had become. Two judges scored the bout 95-95, while the third had Verhoeven leading 96-94, placing the Ukrainian at serious risk of suffering the first defeat of his professional boxing career.

The turning point came late in the 11th round when Oleksandr Usyk produced a trademark burst of precision, landing a devastating uppercut that sent Rico Verhoeven crashing to the canvas.

READ ALSO:

Although Verhoeven rose before the referee’s count and appeared ready to continue, referee Mark Lyson controversially waved off the contest with just one second remaining in the round after Usyk unleashed a rapid follow-up attack.

The stoppage immediately sparked protests from Verhoeven’s corner and ignited widespread debate across the boxing world, with many fans and analysts describing the intervention as premature.

Speaking after the fight, Usyk acknowledged the toughness of his opponent.

“This fight was hard. It was a very good fight,” the champion said.

Verhoeven, however, questioned the referee’s decision and called for a rematch.

“I wanted the referee to let me continue or stop it in the final round. I thought we were balanced on the scorecards,” the Dutchman said.

The bout carried major championship implications, with Usyk’s WBC heavyweight title fully on the line, alongside a defence of his WBA ‘super’ title. The event drew global attention and attracted a star-studded audience that included Anthony Joshua, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Terence Crawford, and Hollywood actor Jason Statham.

The victory improved Usyk’s professional record to 25-0, preserving his dominance as the division’s leading heavyweight champion.

However, the controversy surrounding the stoppage has already intensified calls for an immediate rematch, with many believing Verhoeven had done enough to earn another shot.

For boxing fans, the historic night in Egypt will likely be remembered not only for its spectacular setting but also for one of the most disputed endings in recent heavyweight boxing history.

EPL Final Day: Tottenham Fight for Survival, Other Shock Results Expected

The curtain will fall on the 2025/2026 Premier League season this Sunday with all 10 matches kicking off simultaneously, as attention shifts from the title race to battles for survival, European qualification and possible final-day upsets.

Arsenal have already been confirmed champions after Manchester City’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth on Tuesday night handed Mikel Arteta’s men their first league title in 22 years.

While the top five positions appear almost settled, Bournemouth still retain slim hopes of sneaking into the Champions League places, setting the stage for a tense and dramatic finale across the league.

One of the biggest talking points will be at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Tottenham face Everton in a must-win encounter to avoid relegation.

Spurs head into the decisive clash after a painful 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, while Everton also suffered a 3-1 home loss to Sunderland. The North London club now have their survival firmly in their own hands — victory against Everton guarantees Premier League football next season, while any slip could prove disastrous.

Everton, on the other hand, will be aiming to end the campaign strongly and potentially secure a top-half finish.

Beyond the survival battle, several fixtures are already being tipped to produce shock outcomes on the final day.

At Selhurst Park, newly crowned champions Arsenal could stumble against Crystal Palace after a week-long title celebration and expected squad rotation from Arteta.

Manchester United’s trip to Brighton also looks tricky, with reports suggesting Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro could miss the encounter, leaving the Red Devils vulnerable against an in-form Seagulls side.

Liverpool’s clash with Brentford carries emotional significance as Mohamed Salah is expected to make his final appearance at Anfield. However, the Reds’ inconsistent form could hand Brentford an opportunity to strengthen their push for European football.

At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City host Aston Villa in what will be Pep Guardiola’s final game in charge. Villa arrive buoyed by their Europa League triumph and could spoil City’s farewell party after the champions surrendered the title to Arsenal.

Another potential upset could come at the Stadium of Light, where Sunderland host Chelsea. Sunderland have turned their home ground into a fortress this season, while Chelsea’s inconsistent form has left their hopes of qualifying for Europe hanging by a thread.

With survival, pride, European places and emotional farewells all on the line, the Premier League’s final day promises high tension and plenty of drama.

Osimhen Honoured with Presidential Reception as Chelsea, Barcelona Circle for Nigerian Superstar

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has hosted Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and his Galatasaray teammates following the club’s latest Süper Lig victory.

This came even as top European clubs including Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)ChelseaBarcelona, and Bayern Munich circle for the Nigerian superstar.

The reception, held at the prestigious Presidential Complex in Ankara, celebrated Galatasaray’s continued dominance in Turkish football after securing their 26th league title—a feat that further cemented the club’s place as the most successful in Turkish football history.

Galatasaray extended their impressive run this season, finishing three points ahead of fierce rivals Fenerbahçe to clinch the championship.

The victory marked the club’s fourth consecutive Süper Lig crown, underscoring their complete control over domestic football in recent years.

If Galatasaray wins the Süper Lig title again next season, they will become the first club in Turkish football history to win five straight league championships—an unprecedented achievement that would separate them from every other team in the nation’s history.

The Nigerian forward played a decisive role in Galatasaray’s successful campaign, delivering impressive numbers despite spending some time on the sidelines due to injury.

Osimhen registered 15 league goals and five assists in just 22 Süper Lig appearances, proving his worth as the team’s most lethal attacking weapon.

The 27-year-old striker also made his mark on the European stage, contributing seven goals and three assists in 10 UEFA Champions League matches before Galatasaray’s elimination by Liverpool in the round of 16.

According to statistical analysis, Osimhen’s goal involvement this season stands at approximately one goal contribution per 90 minutes, with an expected assists (xA) output placing him above 87 percent of players in the Süper Lig.

His passing accuracy has been recorded at 74.35%, and he averages 1.38 key passes per game, creating significant scoring chances for his teammates.

Since moving to the Turkish champions, Osimhen has registered an impressive 57 goals and 16 assists in 73 appearances across all competitions. His pace, power, physical presence, and relentless pressing ability have made him one of Europe’s most coveted forwards.

Following their Süper Lig victory, the entire Galatasaray squad was honored with a reception by President Erdoğan. Osimhen and his teammates, all dressed sharply in black suits, were welcomed to the Presidential Complex in Ankara, where they exchanged handshakes with the Turkish leader in a ceremony that highlighted the significance of the team’s achievement.

Galatasaray President Dursun Özbek presented an official club jersey to President Erdoğan during the ceremony, a traditional gesture that symbolizes the bond between the club and the nation’s highest office.

During the event, Osimhen personally addressed the Turkish leader, expressing his gratitude for the invitation and speaking warmly about the reception. The Nigerian forward acknowledged the honour of being hosted at the presidential level, a rare privilege reserved for championship-winning teams.

Osimhen has enjoyed a highly productive and successful spell with the Turkish giants, winning three titles since his arrival at the club.

He joined Galatasaray on a permanent basis last summer following an initial loan spell from Napoli, signing a four-year contract that ties him to the club through to 30 June 2029.

The move came after a somewhat underwhelming final season in Italy, where his relationship with Napoli management had become strained.

Despite his contractual commitment to Galatasaray, Osimhen has continued to speak warmly about life in Istanbul and has not publicly pushed for a move. “Everything here is on another level.

Galatasaray fans show you their affection both at away matches and in your private life. They are the best supporters I have seen in my entire career, ” Osimhen previously said.

His connection with the passionate Turkish fanbase has made him a beloved figure at Rams Park, where his name is regularly chanted by thousands of devoted supporters.

At present, numerous European clubs are attempting to attract the striker away from Galatasaray.

The 27-year-old has been linked with moves to clubs including ChelseaBarcelona, and Bayern Munich, but Galatasaray have remained committed to keeping the Nigerian forward.

However, the transfer speculation has intensified significantly in recent weeks. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have emerged as serious contenders for Osimhen’s signature, with reports suggesting the French champions are preparing to meet Galatasaray’s massive €150 million valuation for the Nigerian striker.

PSG’s push is reportedly being driven by manager Luis Enrique, who is seeking a more physical and direct striker to lead his attack following the departure of Kylian Mbappé and the aging of other attacking options.

According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Osimhen’s performances have drawn attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Real MadridFC BarcelonaArsenalLiverpool, and Juventus all monitoring his situation closely.

Turkish football analyst Zeki Uzundurukan has claimed that Galatasaray could be prepared to part ways with Osimhen for a fee in excess of €120 million, though the club must carefully assess whether they can adequately replace him.

The Nigerian’s current market value, boosted by his consistent goal-scoring record and Champions League experience, makes him one of the most expensive strikers in world football.

For now, Galatasaray remain firm on their valuation, while Europe’s top clubs continue to monitor a deal that could become one of the biggest transfers of the summer window.

The coming weeks are expected to provide greater clarity on whether the Nigerian striker will remain in Istanbul or embark on a new challenge at one of Europe’s elite clubs.

With the summer transfer window opening in June, speculation is expected to reach fever pitch as clubs begin formal negotiations. Despite the growing transfer noise, Osimhen has remained focused on celebrating Galatasaray’s latest triumph.

The presidential reception in Ankara served as a fitting capstone to a remarkable season, one in which the Super Eagles star proved once again why he is considered one of the best strikers in world football.

Whether he stays or leaves, his legacy at Galatasaray is already secure: a three-time champion, a fan favorite, and a player who delivered when it mattered most.
