Early Morning Blaze Destroys Ajegunle Shopping Complex, Shops, Goods Worth Millions
A fire outbreak gutted a one-storey shopping complex and surrounding shops along Amore Street, Ajegunle, Boundary area of Lagos, early Wednesday morning, destroying goods valued at millions of naira, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed.
According to a preliminary report by LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the blaze was reported at 2:40 a.m. via the agency’s 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency Lines, prompting an immediate activation of the state’s emergency response plan. The LASEMA Response Team (LRT) arrived at the scene by 3:22 a.m. to find active flames consuming the shopping complex, which housed numerous clothing dealers and storage units.

“Upon arrival, it was observed that the fire was intense, spreading rapidly due to the high volume of combustible materials in the complex and surrounding shops,” the statement said.
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was triggered by a power surge following the restoration of electricity. Fortunately, there were no casualties or loss of lives, though the entire complex and adjacent shops were completely destroyed.
LASEMA said it cordoned off the area, conducted a risk assessment, and implemented safety measures to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings. The agency coordinated a multi-agency response including the LASEMA Fire Unit, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and Nigeria Police Force, successfully extinguishing the blaze.
The agency also noted that rescue and recovery operations have concluded, but continuous monitoring is ongoing to prevent re-ignition, and structural assessments are required to evaluate the safety of the affected buildings.
In the aftermath, LASEMA urged commercial property owners to review fire safety measures, storage protocols, and ensure regular monitoring to prevent similar incidents in the future.
