Edo Police Arrest TikTok User for Faking Kidnap to Gain Followers
The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Osarobo Omoyemen, for allegedly faking her own kidnap in a bid to boost her popularity on TikTok.
Omoyemen had posted a viral video claiming she was abducted along Upper Sakponba Road in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, and that police officers later rescued her. She further alleged that she was detained at Akpata Police Station, where officers reportedly collected N10,000 before releasing her.
However, the spokesman for the Edo Police Command, Moses Yamu, debunked her claims, stating that investigations revealed the entire story was fabricated for social media attention. He confirmed that Omoyemen has been charged to court for circulating false information.

According to Yamu, “During interrogation, Omoyemen confessed that she staged the incident solely to generate online content and attract followers to her TikTok page.”
He revealed that Omoyemen had deleted an earlier video in which an accomplice could be heard urging viewers to follow her account, exposing the motive behind the hoax. Yamu added that her false alarm was capable of inciting public hostility against the police and causing unnecessary tension within the state.
He said efforts are underway to arrest her accomplices, warning that the police will not tolerate attempts to misuse social media to create panic or disturb public peace.
The Edo Police urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid spreading unverified information, especially on digital platforms.
