Edo poll: IGP bans state security force, deploys more police

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has forbidden the Edo State Security Network, a state-run security force, from participating in the upcoming gubernatorial elections.

The IGP’s directive comes just before the Edo state governorship election, set for September 21, 2024.

The police chief also revealed that a massive security force of 43,000 personnel, comprising police, military, and other security agents, will be deployed for the election.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stakeholders meeting in Benin, the state capital, Egbetokun emphasized that ensuring the safety of voters and electoral materials is the sole responsibility of the Police.

He added that the police will receive backup from other security agencies to guarantee a free and fair election. “No private or state-owned security apparatus would be allowed to operate during and after the election,” the IGP said.
