Details surrounding her death remained sketchy as of press time, but family sources disclosed that she died on Friday afternoon.
Her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, confirmed the development in a statement shared on his Facebook page, expressing grief over the loss.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah SWT we came and to Him we shall all return. I would like to inform the public of the demise of my grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away a few hours ago,” he wrote.
He described the deceased as the biological mother of his father, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, and prayed for Almighty Allah to grant her soul eternal rest.
“We are grateful for the life she lived and may Allah SWT bless her gentle soul. May He bless the souls of the parents we have lost. On behalf of our family, we seek your prayers. Thank you,” Bello added.
The passing of Hajiya Umma comes at a challenging time for the El-Rufai family, as Nasir El-Rufai is currently facing legal proceedings.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had arraigned the former governor on a 10-count charge bordering on alleged conversion of public property and money laundering following about one month in detention.
El-Rufai, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna, presided over by Justice Rilwanu Aikawa, adjourned the hearing of his bail application to March 31 after listening to arguments from both the defence and prosecution earlier in the week.
As condolences continue to pour in, family members and associates have called for prayers for the repose of Hajiya Umma’s soul.
