Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, on Monday resumed duty after his annual vacation abroad.
But the CBN head office was said to have been invaded by operatives of the Department of State Service same day ostensibly to effect the arrest of Emefiele.
The DSS operatives reportedly came in 20 vehicles with armed personnel.
It was learnt that the operatives barred all workers of the bank from gaining access to Emefiele’s office.
Emefiele, who proceeded on leave in December 2022, resumed work Monday, January 16.
A statement by the CBN Osita Nwanisobi Director, Corporate Communications Osita Nwanisobi, said Emefiele, who resumed on Monday, remained committed to performing the task before him in line with his oath of office and the policy direction of President Muhammadu Buhari.
This is coming ahead of the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the year scheduled for January 23 to 24, 2023.
The CBN statement was silent on the reported SSS invasion of the CBN office.
While thanking the public for keeping faith with the apex bank, it said, “We urge Nigerians to continue to support the policies of the bank aimed at ensuring a stable financial system and the Nigerian economy in general.”
There has been a running battle between the SSS and Emefiele over alleged terrorism financing.
The secret service had earlier sought a court order to arrest Emefiele.
But the FCT High Court in December barred the SSS from arresting, inviting, or detaining Emefiele.
