The Bayero University Mass Communication Alumni Association has lined up a number of activities including a symposium to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the institution’s Mass Comm department, which is now a Faculty of Communication.
Chairman, Alumni Caretaker Committee, Dr Abubakar Minjibir, disclosed this at a news conference in Kano.
He said that the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, who also graduated from the department, would be the royal father of the day.
Alhaji Garba Bello-Kankarofi, former Registrar, Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria, also a graduate of the department, would serve as guest speaker, he added.
He said the Mass Communication programme started at the BUK in 1978 and became the third university to offer the course in the country.
Minjibir said that the university produced its pioneer set of Mass Communication graduates in 1981, adding that the department, now a Faculty of Communications, had graduated thousands of students since its inception.
According to him, graduates of Professional Diploma in Mass Communication, BSc and MSc are all eligible members of the association.
He said that the lecture would be delivered on February 12, 2022 at the university’s Convocation Arena, New Site.
Other activities lined up for the event are career talk and anniversary dinner, to be held in the morning and evening of February 11, 2022, respectively.
Speakers invited to deliver lectures at the career talk are listed as Alhaji Garba Bello Kankarofi, former Registrar APCON; Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo, President Nigerian Institute of Public Relations; Hajiya Sa’a Ibrahim, Director General Abubakar Rimi Television; and Yushau Shuaib of Image Merchants Promotion, Publishers of PRNigeria and Economic Confidential.
With the upgrade of the Department of Mass Communication to full-fledged Faculty of Communication, it has three departments, namely: Mass Communication, Theatre and Performing Arts; and Information and Media Studies, while the Department of Films Studies and that of Public Relations are said to be in the pipeline.
