Energy theft affecting power supply across Kwara, Kogi, others – IBEDC
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) disclosed on Sunday that it has documented “over 1,450 instances of energy theft between January and February 2024”.
The regions affected by this issue span Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, and parts of Kogi, Niger, and Ekiti states, resulting in frequent power outages causing disruptions and inconveniences for both residents and businesses alike.
Numerous households have expressed distress over the adverse impact of the ongoing heat waves, which are exacerbated by the lack of electricity.

In a statement released by its media relations officer, Olori Busolami Tunwase, IBEDC attributed one of the key challenges affecting its operations to the inadequate supply of gas to power-generating companies (GenCos), which has led to a gradual decline in available power generation for the grid.
The company also lamented the persistent issues of vandalism and theft of electricity infrastructure, along with customer payment apathy, which continue to hamper power supply.
However, despite these challenges, IBEDC expressed optimism that the problem of poor power supply will soon be resolved. Regarding energy theft and infrastructure vandalism, IBEDC has actively collaborated with security agencies to combat these illegal activities.
