Former Adamawa North Senator, Ishaku Elisha Abbo
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Gwagwalada, has arraigned former Adamawa North Senator, Ishaku Elisha Abbo, alongside a second defendant, over allegations of rape involving a 13-year-old schoolgirl. Both defendants pleaded not guilty to all counts.
The criminal case, Charge No: CR/635/25, titled Inspector General of Police v. Senator Ishaku Elisha Abbo & Anor, is being heard before Justice I. Mohammed in Court 50 of the FCT High Court. The arraignment was conducted on Wednesday following a criminal petition filed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Counsel appearances were announced, with J. B. Anzaku representing the prosecution, M. J. Numa (SAN) for Abbo, and Sunusi Musa (SAN) for the second defendant. Two lawyers appeared to watch brief for the complainant, sparking objections from Abbo’s legal team, who questioned the propriety of such representation in a superior court. Justice Mohammed cautioned the defence against escalating the matter and asked them to provide supporting judicial authorities.

After arraignment, both defendants applied for bail. Abbo was granted bail of ₦50 million with two sureties of good repute and ordered to surrender his international passport. The second defendant was granted ₦40 million bail, also with two sureties. The court adjourned the case to February 11, 2026, for hearing.
The charges follow reports that the Nigeria Police had filed multiple counts against Abbo relating to rape and sexual assault of a minor, with investigators asserting there was sufficient evidence to bring the matter to trial.
Abbo, who represented Adamawa North Senatorial District until losing his seat after an appellate court decision in October 2023, now faces legal proceedings that could determine his criminal liability under Nigerian law.
