False Rape Claim: Ogun Police Release TikToker Mirabel to Women Affairs

The Ogun State Police Command has released popular TikToker Abigeal Nsikak, widely known as Mirabel, to the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development following her voluntary appearance at a police station in connection with an alleged false rape claim.

The development was confirmed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, in a statement issued on Wednesday via X. According to the police, Mirabel voluntarily presented herself at the station, where she underwent a thorough medical evaluation and has since been fully cooperative with investigators.

The police explained that, considering her welfare, emotional state, and support needs, she was released into the care of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. The ministry has assumed full responsibility for her wellbeing and has assured the Command that she will be made available whenever required as investigations continue.

The Ogun State Police Command emphasized that the matter is being handled with utmost care, professionalism, and sensitivity, particularly due to the implications for sexual assault survivors, public confidence, and justice. Members of the public were urged to refrain from speculation, harassment, or prejudicial commentary, while allowing investigators to carry out their duties without interference. The Command assured that further updates would be provided as developments unfold.

The case first drew national attention in mid-February when Mirabel posted emotional and tearful videos on TikTok, alleging that unidentified individuals broke into her home in Ogijo, Ogun State, and sexually assaulted her. The videos went viral, triggering widespread outrage, sympathy, and concern across the country.

Following the viral posts, several celebrities, influencers, and social commentators weighed in on the broader issue of sexual violence in Nigeria. The public reaction also included reported financial donations made in support of Mirabel, as the videos sparked intense emotional responses online.

However, the narrative soon came under intense scrutiny after social media users and commentators pointed out alleged inconsistencies in her account. These included the absence of corroborating phone records, lack of physical evidence indicating a forced entry at the scene, and perceived gaps in the timeline of events she described.

Public debate intensified after Mirabel appeared in a widely circulated interview with social media activist VeryDarkMan, during which she stated that she might not have been raped. The interview marked a major turning point in public perception and led to widespread calls for her prosecution for allegedly making a false accusation.

Despite the controversy, the police have clarified that no arrests have been made in relation to the alleged incident. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities stressed that conclusions would only be reached after all facts have been thoroughly examined and evaluated.

The Ogun State Police reaffirmed their commitment to upholding justice, protecting genuine victims of sexual assault, and enforcing the rule of law, while also ensuring that any false allegations, if established, are addressed strictly within the framework of the law.
