Favour Ofili faces three-year wait to represent Turkey

Nigerian sprint star Favour Ofili may have to wait up to three years before she can officially compete for Turkey in international athletics, as World Athletics’ regulations could delay her alleged switch from Nigeria.

The 22-year-old athlete, who represented Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics, might be subjected to a mandatory three-year ineligibility period in accordance with World Athletics’ Eligibility Rules—unless specific conditions are met for an exemption.

Ofili’s rumored move to Turkey has sparked intense debate within Nigeria’s sporting community.

The decision, though yet to be formally confirmed, is reportedly driven by her growing discontent with Nigeria’s athletics administration, which she feels has repeatedly let her down.

According to the report, her decision stems from “heartbreak, scandal, and years of being failed by her home federation.”

Ofili is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most talented athletes. She competes in the 100m, 200m, and 400m events and currently holds the national record in the 200m with a time of 21.96 seconds—breaking the long-standing mark held by Blessing Okagbare.

Despite her growing profile and achievements, the alleged switch has become a flashpoint for wider conversations on athlete welfare and systemic problems in Nigerian sports.

While nothing official has been announced, World Athletics rules make it clear that “she cannot immediately represent Turkey in major international competitions.
