FCCPC Seals Ikeja Electric Office in Lagos Over Consumer Rights Violations

FCCPC Seals Ikeja Electric Office in Lagos Over Consumer Rights Violations

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) on Thursday sealed the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) office in Alausa, Lagos, citing consumer rights violations and non-compliance with regulatory directives.

The enforcement followed prolonged efforts by regulators to resolve a metering and service-related dispute. Bola Adeyinka, FCCPC’s Director of Surveillance and Investigation, said the action was taken under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018 after repeated engagements with Ikeja Electric yielded no results.

The Commission noted that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had previously directed Ikeja Electric to unbundle a Maximum Demand account into 20 separate accounts to reflect 19 residential units and one service point. The directive also required proper metering and electricity connection for each unit.

Despite the complainant fulfilling all payment obligations, Ikeja Electric failed to implement the regulatory order, leaving the property without electricity for more than two and a half years. The prolonged disconnection prevented the owner from utilising the 19 residential apartments.

Adeyinka confirmed that the seal on the facility will remain until Ikeja Electric fully complies with all regulatory directives and submits written evidence of compliance to both the FCCPC and NERC. She stressed that the enforcement was a proportionate measure after multiple opportunities for voluntary compliance were ignored.

The FCCPC reiterated its commitment to consumer protection and warned that all electricity distribution companies must uphold their obligations to customers across Nigeria.
