Fear in Plateau as Bandits Kill Soldier, Displace Over 300 Residents

No fewer than 300 residents have fled their homes following deadly attacks by suspected bandits on communities in Plateau State, which left a soldier and several civilians dead.

The attacks occurred in Zurak and Sabon Gari communities of Bashar District in Wase Local Government Area, where armed men reportedly launched coordinated assaults, targeting both civilians and security personnel stationed in the area.

Local sources said the assailants first attacked a military checkpoint, leading to a fierce gun battle with security operatives. During the confrontation, a soldier was killed, while several residents lost their lives. Some security personnel were also reported missing after the incident.

Following the violence, fear spread rapidly across the affected communities, forcing hundreds of residents, including women and children, to flee to neighbouring villages and nearby bushes in search of safety. Many families reportedly abandoned their homes overnight to avoid further attacks.

Residents said the bandits also looted shops, destroyed property and set houses ablaze, worsening the humanitarian situation in the area. Farming activities and local trade have been disrupted, raising concerns about food security and livelihoods in the communities.

The latest attack adds to growing worries over rising insecurity in Plateau State, where rural communities have continued to face repeated assaults by armed groups despite ongoing security operations.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Displaced residents are calling on the government to strengthen security presence in the area and provide urgent support to affected families.
