Federal High Court Convicts Nnamdi Kanu on Terrorism Charge Over Inciting Broadcasts
The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on the first count of the terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
Justice James Omotosho ruled that the prosecution presented “uncontroverted evidence” showing that Kanu used online broadcasts to incite violence, direct attacks on security agents, and encourage killings in pursuit of the Biafra separatist movement.

The court noted that Kanu’s failure to present any defence—after multiple opportunities—amounted to a waiver of his right to call witnesses.
Kanu had attempted to stop the ruling through fresh applications at both the Court of Appeal and the High Court, arguing that the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act under which he was charged has been repealed. Those efforts did not halt the judgment.
The conviction comes amid heightened tension in the Southeast and days after fresh protests in Abuja demanding Kanu’s release.
