FG Approves N1 Trillion Metropolitan Rail Service to Transform Kano Urban Transport

The Federal Government (FG) has approved the construction of a N1 trillion metropolitan rail system in Kano State, a move aimed at modernizing urban transport, reducing traffic congestion, and boosting economic activities in one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing cities.

The Kano Metropolitan Rail Service is expected to connect major districts across the city with multiple rail lines, modern stations, and state-of-the-art trains, providing residents with a safe, efficient, and reliable mode of public transportation. Government officials describe the project as a “game-changer” for mobility in northern Nigeria.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the project will not only improve daily commuting for residents but will also create thousands of jobs during both construction and operational phases. The rail system is part of the federal government’s broader urban infrastructure development agenda, which seeks to expand sustainable transport networks in Nigeria’s major cities.

Funding for the N1 trillion project is expected to come from a mix of public financing, private sector partnerships, and international loans or grants. Officials assured that strict oversight will be in place to ensure timely execution and transparency throughout the project lifecycle.

Experts say the rail initiative could attract investment, stimulate local economies, and reduce the over-reliance on road transport, which has been a major source of congestion and delays in Kano. Political analysts also highlight that the project aligns with Nigeria’s long-term vision of modernizing public transport infrastructure and promoting urban development.

The federal government has confirmed that work on the project is set to commence soon, with details on contractor selection, project phases, and timelines expected to be announced in the coming months.
