FG begins 3-month reconstruction of Iddo Bridge, restricts heavy vehicles from Nov 22
The Federal Government has announced plans to commence major repair works on the Iddo Bridge in Lagos, with restrictions on heavy-duty and articulated vehicles beginning next weekend.
Speaking during a press briefing at the bridge site, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, said the project would involve the demolition and reconstruction of three critical spans of the bridge, which has not undergone major rehabilitation since it was built several decades ago.
“Come next weekend—Saturday and Sunday—this Iddo Bridge will be restricted to heavy and articulated vehicles,” Kesha said.
“We will install height barriers at key points, including the U-turn by the old NIPOST office near LAWMA, to prevent trailers and long vehicles from accessing the bridge.”
She explained that articulated vehicles coming from Apapa would no longer be able to use the Iddo route to Carter Bridge but would have to divert through Costain and Eko Bridge instead.
Similar height limit barriers will also be placed on the Carter Bridge end to restrict access from Ilubirin.

According to the Controller, the demolition of the bridge deck will begin on November 22–23, starting from the Apapa-bound section, after which reconstruction will commence.
During the process, traffic will be diverted to the Carter Bridge side under a counterflow arrangement for light vehicles only.
“We’re looking at about three months for the entire exercise—demolition and reconstruction—up to early March 2026,” she added. “This includes curing time for the new deck before reopening it to traffic.”
Kesha assured Lagosians that the Federal Ministry of Works, in collaboration with Lagos State traffic agencies including the FRSC, LASTMA, and the police, had made adequate arrangements to manage vehicular movement during the construction period.
She urged motorists, particularly trailer and tanker drivers, to comply with the restrictions and use alternative routes such as Eko Bridge, Costain Roundabout, and Third Mainland Bridge to reach destinations in Ebute-Metta, Oyingbo, or the Island.
“We do not need the blood of any Nigerian for us to do what we need to do,” she said, emphasizing the importance of safety and public awareness.
“We’ve begun advocacy to truck unions and garages to ensure drivers understand the restrictions before installation begins next weekend.”
The rehabilitation, once completed, is expected to restore the structural integrity of the Iddo Bridge and ease traffic movement along the busy Lagos Mainland–Island corridor.
