FG Confirms Debris from US–Nigeria Joint Airstrikes on ISIS in Sokoto Fell in Offa

The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that debris from precision airstrikes carried out during a joint military operation between Nigeria and the United States landed in Offa, Kwara State, and Jabo, Sokoto State, following an overnight assault on Islamic State (ISIS) enclaves in northwest Nigeria.

According to the government, the strikes targeted ISIS terrorist camps located in the Bauni forest axis of Tangaza Local Government Area, Sokoto State, and were executed between 12:12 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. on December 26, 2025, with the approval of President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said fragments from the operation fell in Jabo, Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, and in Offa, Kwara State, near a hotel facility.

He assured Nigerians that no civilian casualties were recorded in either location, adding that security agencies swiftly cordoned off and secured the affected areas.

Idris explained that the operation was conducted “in close coordination with the Government of the United States of America”, and involved the deployment of 16 GPS-guided precision munitions fired from MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles, launched from maritime platforms in the Gulf of Guinea.

He said intelligence reports confirmed that the targeted sites were being used by foreign ISIS fighters infiltrating Nigeria from the Sahel, working alongside local terror affiliates to plan large-scale attacks within Nigerian territory.

Earlier on Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced the strikes via his Truth Social account, stating that the operation was aimed at terrorists responsible for deadly attacks on Christian communities.

“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorist scum in northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians,” Trump wrote.

He added that the terrorists had been previously warned to halt the killings, stressing that the strikes were a direct response to continued violence.
