The Federal Government on Tuesday named the Idu railway complex and the light rail station, both in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, after the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed.
Mohammed is a former minister of environment in Nigeria.
The Federal Ministry of Transportation announced railway stations’ renaming in a statement signed by its director, Eric Ojikewe.
The statement read, “The Federal Government of Nigeria has named the Idu railway complex, Idu train station, and the light train station of the Federal Capital Territory and all its facilities after the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Mrs. Amina J. Mohammed.
“It has also gained the concurrence of the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon Rotimi Amaechi. and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Mohammed Bello.”
The UN deputy secretary-general has thus become the first living Nigerian woman to have a railway station named after her.
In 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari named some stations along the Lagos-Ibadan and the Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri corridors after some famous Nigerians.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan; national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu; Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka; and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo are among those who made the list.
Other Nigerians that stations were named after are Mobolaji Johnson (Ebute Metta Station); Babatunde Fashola (Agege Station); Lateef Jakande (Agbado Station); Obafemi Awolowo (Ibadan Station), Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (Papalanto Station); Segun Osoba (Olodo Station) and Micheal Ibru (Opara Station).
